Kingston Primary School

OUR KINGSTON WRITING CURRICULUM

We Are Writers!

At Kingston Primary School, we are committed to helping our children become confident, effective writers who can write for a purpose across a range of genres.

Writing Statement of Intent

At Kingston, we understand how important it is for children to leave primary school as skilled writers, able to express themselves clearly and creatively. Equally, we want our pupils to love writing.

To achieve this, we have designed a carefully thought-out writing curriculum that ensures every child’s writing journey is successful and prepares them for the next stage of their education.

We Believe:

How We Become Writers at Kingston:

At Kingston, we believe that successful writing grows from strong foundations. Oracy nurtures thinking and communication, reading broadens knowledge, vocabulary enriches expression, grammar shapes ideas and writing brings them to life. Through editing and publishing, children refine and celebrate their voice as confident, articulate authors.

Our writing curriculum does not exist in isolation. Every strand of our English curriculum is carefully connected, ensuring pupils develop the language, knowledge and confidence needed to communicate effectively across a range of purposes and audiences.

The Curriculum for Each Year Group

Our writing curriculum is structured to show clear progression in knowledge and skills from year to year. Each year group includes:

  • Banding sheets of writing expectations, used in all writing sessions to ensure consistent progression.
  • The Kingston Writing Process, underpinned by evidence-based research, to guide each stage of writing.
  • Non-negotiables for teaching writing, to maintain high standards across the school.
  • Knowledge organisers for each genre, showing key skills, vocabulary, and strong examples.

Implementation of Our Writing Curriculum

Whole-School Approach:

  • Daily literacy lessons, ensuring regular writing practice.
  • One piece of in-depth writing per week, which is also marked in depth.
  • Weekly handwriting practice using Letter-Join.
  • The English Lead is an experienced moderator, ensuring consistent standards across all year groups.

Internal and external moderation guarantees consistency and quality across the school.

Progressive Curriculum

Our writing curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build skills and knowledge year on year. By highlighting the genres, skills, and knowledge taught in each year group, we ensure pupils leave Kingston as confident, competent writers.

Knowledge Organisers

For each genre, we provide knowledge organisers for children and families. These clearly show:

  • What children have previously learnt about the genre
  • What they are expected to learn in their current year
  • Strong examples of texts
  • Key vocabulary for both fiction and non-fiction writing

These organisers help children apply prior knowledge, make connections, and become independent writers.
