OUR KINGSTON COMPUTING CURRICULUM

We Are Computing Experts!

We believe every child can develop mastery, confidence and a love of computing with high-quality teaching, a well-sequenced curriculum, and the right support.

Computing Statement of Intent

At Kingston, we want all children to be fully prepared to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Using the specialist Purple Mash Computing Scheme as the foundation for our curriculum, we enhance learning further with hands-on programming opportunities using Beebots and Microbits, a strong and embedded approach to Online Safety, and expert-led workshops.

We aim for every pupil to:

  • Become confident, creative and independent users of technology.
  • Find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information effectively.
  • Know more, remember more and understand more about computing as they progress through school.
  • Apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science.
  • Analyse problems in computational terms and gain repeated practical experience writing computer programs.
  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

Our intention is to develop a computing curriculum that provides pupils with essential digital skills and the confidence to apply them in a rapidly evolving society.

Implementation

Our computing curriculum is built upon four key principles: breadth, progression, real-world relevance and safety.

Curriculum Design & Resources

  • We follow the Purple Mash Computing Scheme, providing clear progression and full National Curriculum coverage.
  • Teachers enhance this scheme with practical, age-appropriate programming using Beebots (EYFS/KS1) and Microbits (KS2).
  • We also use Google Suite (Docs, Slides, Sheets) across KS1 and KS2 to develop real-world digital literacy skills. In addition, pupils regularly use a range of high-quality iPad apps including iMovie, Book Creator, GarageBand, Scratch Jr, Stop Motion Studio, and others to support creativity, multimedia learning and coding.

Lessons are taught by our specialist Computing Coach and class teachers.

  • Children have access to high‑quality hardware and software to support learning across digital literacy, computer science and information technology.

Online Safety – A Whole-School Commitment

  • Online Safety is woven into every computing lesson and discussed each time a device is used, regardless of subject.
  • Pupils participate in specialist workshops led by The Two Johns, nationally recognised online safety experts.
  • Our Headteacher’s weekly newsletter includes an online safety and screen‑time section, with posters and guidance on:
    • Reducing screen time
    • Applying parental controls to devices and games
    • Staying safe on popular games and apps
    • Recognising online risks and reporting concerns
  • When online safety concerns arise, parents are informed and additional support is offered.
  • Opportunities for the safe and responsible use of technology are threaded throughout the wider curriculum.

Progression and Vocabulary

  • Skills and knowledge progress clearly from EYFS to Year 6.
  • Each year group uses Declarative and Procedural Knowledge organisers and have year group speicifc ey vocabuluaryto support retrieval and deepen conceptual understanding.

Impact

By the time children leave Kingston, they will:

  • Be confident, capable users of technology both at home and in school.
  • Apply computational thinking to solve problems and create purposeful, high‑quality digital content.
  • Understand the implications of technology in a rapidly evolving digital world.
  • Know how to stay safe online and act responsibly when using digital systems.
  • Demonstrate and apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, liberty and rule of law within digital contexts.

Our Kingston Computing Curriculum ensures every pupil becomes digitally literate, knowledgeable and secure in the skills they need for the future.
