PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH EDUCATION (PSHE) AND RELATIONSHIPS AND SEX (RSE) EDUCATION
Statement of Intent
At Kingston we want our children to grow into healthy, respectful and caring individuals. By receiving a well thought-out RSE curriculum, we aim to prepare our children to be considerate citizens, now and in their future, within the global community. We aim to combine our existing PSHE curriculum and Personal Development skills project together with Relationships and Sex Education to produce a robust and streamlined curriculum.
Children will have opportunities to explore, engage and challenge a range of values through a variety of different lessons, both subject specific and through cross-curricular teaching. Our intent is for Kingston pupils to receive the very best PSH and RS education and to leave Kingston as ‘well rounded’, kind and considerate young people.
Implementation
The school curriculum will focus on three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. The Scheme of work also makes links to British Values and SMSC.
Children will have access to key knowledge, language and meanings in the form of Knowledge organisers. These organisers have been produced with specific subject knowledge, terminology and vocabulary for each year group for the teaching of PSHE, RSE, British Values and SMSC.
The Chris Winters programme and SCARF, amongst many other resources, including No Outsiders: Everyone Different, Everyone Welcome - Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain by Andrew Moffat, will be used to ensure that children receive a progressive curriculum. Whole school, Key Stage and class assemblies will also both complement and consolidate teaching in these areas.

No Outsiders
We believe in the importance of equality and everybody having the same opportunities. This is modelled by our staff and taught through lessons and other experiences both discretely and explicitly. We believe in develop everyone’s personal development and preparing children for a life in modern Britain. At Kingston, everyone is welcome and there are no outsiders. We have a culture of acceptance.
No Outsiders involves the use of age appropriate story books (see below for a list of the books we use) to teach about seven of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010. These include:
- age;
- disability;
- gender reassignment;
- race;
- religion or belief;
- gender;
- sexual orientation.
It is important we create a school culture in which children, staff and the whole school community work together to foster an environment of inclusivity through effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) and character education.
We believe that it is vital that our pupils can discuss inappropriate and discriminative language and understand how to address boundaries in order to prepare them for a future in modern Britain.
We strive to ensure that our pupils are surrounded by a consistent message:
- There are no outsiders here;
- Everyone is different;
- We like being different;
- We are all equal in our difference;
- I can get along with you even if we are different;
- We live in the U.K., our British values support this and the law says this too.

Impact
Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty to their every-day life. Children will have a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be in-line with, or above the national average and behaviour will be of a high standard. Most children will achieve, or exceed, age-related expectations across the wider curriculum.
Pupils will develop a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life.
