Kingston Primary School

OUR KINGSTON PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

We Are Athletes!

HOW WE GET OUR CHILDREN TO BE HEALTHY, HAPPY, FIT, ACTIVE AND SHOW A LOVE FOR A RANGE OF SPORTS!

P.E. Statement Of Intent

We understand how important it is for our pupils to leave Kingston as healthy, fit active children who show tolerance towards others and good sportsmanship. Through sport, we hope that our children will learn that hard-work, dedication and a, ‘never give up attitude’ will not only benefit them through sport, but also through life; whatever avenues they choose to pursue.

We also understand how important it is for our pupils to engage in regular activity and recognise that a healthy diet is key when leading a full life-style.  We have therefore put together a carefully crafted curriculum to ensure that the sporting educational journey our pupils take with us is a successful one, and prepares them for the next stage in their education and life.

  • ‘The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.’ – Pele, football

  • ‘I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.’ – Michael Jordan, basketball

  • ‘A champion is defined not by their wins but by how they can recover when they fall.’ – Serena Williams, tennis

  • ‘Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of; the heck with sugar and spice.” Bethany Hamilton, surfer

  • ‘As long as you have discipline, you can be a success.’ Anthony Joshua, boxer

The Curriculum For Each Year Group Contains:

  • The basic knowledge and skills our children must acquire throughout the year.
  • Equipment to deliver all curriculum areas and engage children in their learning.
  • Lessons that are accessible for all levels; they should help develop children who find a particular area challenging whilst pushing gifted and talented individuals through more advanced challenges.

  • Specialist lessons with our P.E instructor; Miss Dyer.
  • Two, 1 hour lessons with class teacher and specialist instructor; Miss Dyer.
  • Daily run a mile takes place once a week.
  • Membership with the LTA: Tennis For Britain Association.
  • A partnership agreement through Castle Point and Rochford School Sport Partnership, which provides Kingston with CPD, PALs training, access to all competitions, local network support and links to local cubs.

PE Kit

  • Children are expected to change for PE in all year groups. Hair must be tied back and no jewellery worn.
  • For Gym and Dance: shorts and our red Kingston P.E. top
  • For Outdoor Games: shorts/black tracksuit bottoms and our red Kingston P.E. top
  • For Swimming: swimming costume (girls) or swimming trunks (boys), towel, swimming hat, goggles if desired. Children swim in Years 1,2 and 3 for curriculum swimming.

PE Curriculum

  • The PE curriculum includes a number of themes that run throughout Early Years to Year 6. Within each theme, skills are developed in accordance to their ability and prior knowledge. This is a systematic approach to enhance confidence in specific skill sets to and embrace the holistic nature of P.E.
  • Time is also given to swimming and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (which include a year 5 residential to Essex Outdoors Danbury and a five day residential in year 6 to Stubbers).

GAMES:

  • The Games Curriculum is divided into three main areas: Invasion games (such as Football and Hockey), Striking and Fielding Games (such as Cricket and Rounders) and Net and Wall games (such as Tennis and Badminton). Children are expected to learn about all three types of games during each school year.

GYMNASTICS:

  • The focus in gymnastics is on flexibility and confidence with a variety of manoeuvressequences and apparatus.

DANCE:

  • In our dance lessons, children learn formal (traditional and modern) dances as well as experiencing free movement to music.

ATHLETICS:

  • In the summer term, our pupils are taught athletics (running, long jump, throwing etc.) on the field.

SWIMMING:

Impact

The impact of our P.E. curriculum encourages children to confidently take part in a range of sporting activities, understand the basic rules for a range of competitive sports and demonstrate good sportsmanship (whether they are winning - or losing!). Pupils will develop skills that enable them to not only better themselves, but to coach and improve their peers’ abilities. They will gain an understanding around the benefits of fitness and general healthy living. We aim for our pupils to leave Kingston with the sufficient tool-kit of skills and knowledge to continue their sporting journey into secondary education.

School Sport Support

Kingston invests a portion of the Primary PE and Sport funding in working in partnership and collaboration with The Deanes School through the Castle Point and Rochford School Sport Partnership to access a variety of services to benefit students and staff of the school. This allows us to be part of an infrastructure of 50 schools benefitting from guidance and development around high quality physical education, increasing the range and breadth of ‘School Sport’ opportunities and educating young people regarding healthy and active lifestyles.

The attached document provides detail of all of the aspects of the offer which we are able to access. These are clearly defined under three headings of Physical Education, School Sport and Health and Wellbeing.
