Kingston Primary School

YEAR 6

In Upper Key Stage 2 at Kingston,  children continue to experience a varied curriculum. There is a thematic topic-based approach and links are made between different subjects to help children to put their learning into context. Where possible, links are made with real life experiences that our pupils can relate to.

Reading and Homework

Weekly homework is set in Maths, English (grammar or comprehension focus) and spelling every Monday. Pupils are expected to read five times a week as part of our ‘Kingston Reading Scheme’. It is recommended that children read at least five times a week outside school for a minimum of fifteen minutes each time. We have also set every child the challenge to see how many of the Year 6 ‘Reading Doorway’ books they can complete before leaving Kingston.

Thematic Curriculum

We choose exciting and vibrant themes as a vehicle to teach our 'Take on the World' curriculum.  Recent themes have included: Day of the Dead, Graffiti, Crime Scene Investigation, The Wild West and Come dine with us.

We enrich our curriculum provision with lots of educational trips and visits linked to our theme. Recent experiences include visiting Chelmsford County Court and taking part in an inhouse CSI investigation learning about all of the different forensic techniques used to apprehend the criminal!

Children gain knowledge about the different subjects and learn important skills in Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art & Design and Design Technology. Other taught subjects include Music, PSHE, French, Religion and Worldviews and P.E. Children have P.E. lessons twice each week.

The importance of children making progress in English and Maths is reflected in the fact that lessons are taught in these subjects every day.

Children’s progress is assessed throughout the year through observations of how they approach their work in different subjects, through pupils' learning conversations with teachers and through their written work.  Pupils’ writing levels are assessed twice a half term using our Kingston banding sheets during extended writing sessions.  There are formal assessment weeks three times throughout the year which combined with teachers’ ongoing assessments give an indication of where a child is in line with the national average. At the end of year six our pupils sit the National SATs tests. National Curriculum levels are shared with parents and carers at Parent/Teacher conferences and in the end of year written reports. Teachers use the information from the assessments to set targets and plan work to ensure that each child continues to make progress.
